Cansu Özbay: the setter shaping attacking tempo

Born in İzmir on 17 October 1996, Cansu Özbay is a useful player to follow when learning how a volleyball team's attack works. Her decision at the second contact determines more than the destination of the ball: it affects the tempo, the opposing middle's movement and the number of blockers confronting an attacker. Her career traces the development of that decision-making from local youth volleyball to major club and national-team finals.

From İzmir to Beşiktaş and Nilüfer

VakıfBank's official biography records her development at Arkas. She joined Beşiktaş in 2014, spent the second half of that season on loan at Nilüfer Belediyespor and played for Beşiktaş again in 2015–16. This compact but varied period exposed a young setter to different attackers and competitive environments.

She joined VakıfBank for 2016–17. CEV's European club archive likewise lists her with VakıfBank from the 2017 competition season. Starting the story only at the major-club transfer would leave out İzmir and her earlier league experience. A setter develops through training, but also by learning how teammates request the ball and how to respond when reception does not deliver a comfortable starting position.

Club continuity and a world final

Her VakıfBank period brings together the Turkish league, European Champions League and Club World Championship, competitions with separate calendars and formats. For a setter, remaining with a club requires rebuilding the attacking rhythm as hitters change. The same combination may work at a different speed with another player; continuity involves active adjustment, not simply keeping the same jersey.

VakıfBank beat Conegliano in five sets in the 2021 Club World Championship final. Volleyball World's report identifies Özbay's distribution and serving pressure among the elements supporting Isabelle Haak's 28-point performance. The example shows why a setter's contribution cannot be understood from her personal scoring column alone.

On 3 May 2026, VakıfBank defeated Eczacıbaşı 3–1 in the Champions League final to secure the club's seventh European title, adding another major final success to Özbay's club career. The setter selected for that Final Four Dream Team, however, was Joanna Wołosz. A champion team's playmaker can be appreciated without confusing the trophy her team won with an individual tournament award.

Making a setter's decisions visible

When following a rally through Özbay, first check how far the reception is from the net. A clean pass allows quick attacks, both wings and back-row options to remain available. When the ball drifts away, the priority may change to a high set that an attacker can use safely. An attractive-looking hand movement is therefore not, by itself, a complete measure of good setting.

Next watch the opposing middle's first step before Özbay contacts the ball. Revealing direction late can prepare a more favourable blocking match-up for the attacker. Speed alone is insufficient: the hitter's approach, the set's height and the timing of the choice work together. This is a viewing guide rather than a training prescription, intended to make the setter's work easier to recognise in an actual match.

National-team steps: silver, bronze and gold

Türkiye won Nations League silver in 2018 and European Championship silver in 2019. Nations League bronze in 2021 and participation at the Tokyo Games that summer added further major-tournament experience. The Tokyo 2020 name refers to Games played in 2021, an important distinction when reading archived season dates.

Özbay was one of Türkiye's setters in the 2023 Nations League and European championship victories. Team gold and the best-setter award are separate records: the official 2023 Nations League Dream Team named China's Diao Linyu at setter. There is no need to transfer another player's award to explain Özbay's importance; her distribution in documented matches provides a sounder basis.

Serbia in 2023: distributing beyond one attacker

The 2023 Nations League match against Serbia illustrates her use of several options. Volleyball World highlights the connection with Vargas while also recording double-digit scores from Hande Baladın, İlkin Aydın and Eda Erdem. Karakurt supplied an additional attacking contribution from the bench.

This distribution demonstrates the difference between using an outstanding opposite and making the entire attack dependent on her. An early middle threat occupies the opposing block; scoring from the wings makes a defence less able to concentrate on one player. Working with different attackers for club and country also reveals the difficulty of translating a familiar club connection into another international system.

Paris, world silver and the player's own voice

CEV's Paris 2024 roster lists Özbay and Elif Şahin as the two setters. Türkiye reached the semifinals and finished fourth. The national side won World Championship silver in 2025; Volleyball World's tournament review places Özbay third by total successful sets. That total depends on matches and sets played and must not be translated into a claim that she is universally the world's third-best setter.

She also appears on the official 2026 Nations League player list. The TVF watch card here is a brief question-and-answer feature introducing her in her own voice. The photograph dates from 2016 and is not presented as an image of a later tournament victory. Reading dated results, specific rallies and personal presentation together produces a fuller portrait than a single line of trophies.

Questions and explanations

Do her points measure her setting performance?

Not on their own. A setter mostly prepares scoring opportunities for attackers. Distribution needs to be read alongside reception quality, available hitters and the opposing blocking system.

What colour were the 2018 and 2019 national medals?

The 2018 Nations League and 2019 European Championship medals were silver. The 2021 Nations League result was bronze; the 2023 Nations League and European results were gold.

Was she the 2023 Nations League best setter?

No. The official Dream Team setter was Diao Linyu. Özbay belonged to Türkiye's title-winning squad; a team medal and an individual positional award are different records.

What does the 2025 successful-sets ranking show?

It records the total successful sets credited during that tournament. Match count, set count and the statistical definition affect the total. Read it as a measure of tournament production, not an all-purpose ranking of players.
