From İzmir's development teams to major finals

Cansu Özbay was born in İzmir on 17 October 1996 and developed in the Arkas youth system. After experience with Beşiktaş and Nilüfer Belediyespor, she joined VakıfBank before the 2016–2017 season. Her progress as a setter belongs with the experience of working with different attackers and adapting to different tempos. Setting is not simply producing an accurate overhead pass: it requires simultaneous attention to reception quality, the opposing block and the readiness of teammates. Her career shows fundamental technique developing into high-level decision-making. A quick choice in a major final is the brief expression of experience accumulated across many earlier match situations, making distribution as important to her biography as trophies.

How many decisions are inside one set?

There is rarely only one possible answer as the ball reaches Özbay. A quick middle attack, a high set outside, a backcourt connection or an appropriate second-contact attack carries different risks. Good reception preserves more choices, while a ball far from the net can narrow them. Always selecting the strongest attacker makes the block's task easier, but distributing simply to equalise totals can also ignore the match situation. Watch the height of Özbay's set and the attacker's timing as well as its direction. Two deliveries to the same player can create very different opportunities depending on the block. A set's quality also lies in the options it leaves the hitter in the air.

Building an attack after imperfect reception

A setter's expertise is particularly visible after an imperfect first contact. Moving towards a ball away from the net, Özbay must establish balance and choose a direction and tempo that keep an attack possible. A dependable high set can be a better decision than a spectacular solution. Watching only whether the hitter scores misses the work that turns a difficult reception into an attackable ball. Defensive returns also alter the setter's starting position; rallies do not all begin in a standard arrangement. When another player takes the second contact, Özbay can move into attacking or defensive support. Setting is therefore the continual reconstruction of a moving game, not command from a fixed spot.

Club experience and national-team responsibility

Alongside European and world club competition with VakıfBank, Özbay represented Türkiye at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics and was one of the setters in the 2023 Nations League-winning team. Club and national squads do not have identical attackers, so connections require renewed work each summer. A middle's preferred set height, an opposite's approach rhythm and an outside hitter's solution to a difficult ball form a shared language. That language comes from repeated movements as well as spoken instructions. Özbay adapts her technique to those different needs. Her success is therefore better understood through the attacking options she preserves than through a search for one simple assist-like number.

Influencing the game without leading the scoring

Özbay's portrait brings the decision-making player into view. Even when she is among a match's lowest scorers, she can influence the direction of almost every attack. Blocking at the net, serving pressure and backcourt defence add responsibilities beyond distribution. A useful first exercise is to watch the space between reception and the final hit for an entire set. Her choices about when to accelerate, when to return to a safer option and how to move the opposing block gradually become clearer. Volleyball then stops looking like a game belonging only to finishers. Özbay's career demonstrates that combining teammates' strengths within the same rally is a distinctive and demanding athletic expertise in its own right.
