The first major podiums on the road to Paris

Umut Ünlü’s international rise became particularly visible between the 2024 European Championships and that year’s Paralympic Games. World Para Swimming records his first major-event medals at Madeira 2024 before his Paralympic debut in Paris. The short interval shows different levels of competition following one another within the same season. A European medal and a Paralympic title are nevertheless separate results, each earned against its own field and within a different event programme. His early major-event pathway therefore concerns rapidly growing international experience, not the automatic transfer of one success into another. For Turkish Para swimming, it made the connection between a first podium and further ambitions concrete.

6 September: the 50m S3 title

At Paris 2024 on 6 September, Ünlü won the men’s 50m freestyle S3 and became Türkiye’s first Paralympic champion in Para swimming. A sprint places strong demands on technical efficiency from start to finish, with little distance available to recover lost time. His gold was the outcome of one clearly defined race completed ahead of its field. Being first carries wider national significance, but the event and class must remain visible beside that symbolism. The victory belongs to men’s S3 freestyle, not an undifferentiated comparison with other classes or strokes. Naming it accurately gives the achievement its proper athletic setting.

A second victory over 200m the next day

On 7 September, Ünlü also won the men’s 200m freestyle S3 final, earning a second gold at the same Games. Winning two different distances on successive days is not simply repeating one performance. The 50m emphasises speed and immediate efficiency; the 200m adds pacing and the need to preserve technique over a longer effort. His Paris double provides a concrete example of meeting those different demands. Both medals came from individual events, so they are separate results in the national tally. They should not be confused with a relay or mixed-team medal: the story is of one swimmer finishing first in two distinct finals.

Classification and the continuing career

S3 is a Para swimming sport class used in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Classification assesses the effect of eligible impairment on swimming; it is not itself a medical diagnosis or a label for everyday ability. Describing Ünlü’s performances therefore requires the distance and stroke as well as the class. After Paris, bronze at the Singapore 2025 World Championships added another major-event podium. A September 2026 federation account also records his move to Galatasaray following the Games. His contribution to Turkish sport shows specialised athletic skill producing results across different international competitions. The achievement is not only a symbolic moment, but part of a continuing competitive career.
