Born on 6 March 1980, Yeliz Özel offers an unusually rich entry point into Turkish handball. Her experience at European clubs, movement between indoor and beach competition, and work alongside different national-team generations belong to the same career. A playmaker's contribution includes the choices created for others, not simply the goals credited to her. This profile keeps championship wins, finalist finishes and individual recognition separate while exploring why her career matters beyond a results list.

From PTT to European club handball

EHF's historical account places her beginnings at Ankara PTT and her youth international debut against Spain in Adana on 13 November 1995. Reaching national competition early is not, by itself, an explanation of later expertise. Club training and international matches present different rhythms, opposition and expectations. Her development is better understood as a long exchange between those environments than as an overnight arrival on a bigger stage.

The EHF club record includes Kometal Skopje, Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea, Yenimahalle, Kastamonu and İzmir. These names represent more than a transfer itinerary. A central playmaker must learn new defensive habits, the timing of teammates' runs and a coach's attacking language. For that reason, one season's European goal total is a poor substitute for understanding the role she performed and the competition in which that role was tested.

A 2005 final and the meaning of recognition

With Kometal she reached the 2005 Women's Champions League final. That substantial achievement should not be rewritten as winning the trophy. A route to a continental club final involves preparation, elimination pressure and solving problems posed by different opponents. Describing Özel as a finalist is both accurate and a strong statement of the international visibility she brought to Turkish handball.

EHF's biographical record also notes her nomination for the 2006 IHF player-of-the-year award. A nomination is not an award win, and her significance does not require that distinction to disappear. Recognition abroad can make elite European handball seem a possible professional route for younger players. It does not establish that every Turkish club had equivalent resources or access. The individual career and its wider sporting environment should be considered together.

Alanya 2004: a different game on sand

EHF's retrospective records Türkiye finishing fifth in the women's European Beach Handball Championship at Alanya in 2004, while Özel received the women's best-player award. Team placement and individual distinction are different results. This was neither a European team title nor the tournament's leading-scorer prize. Success in another environment illustrates how an established indoor player's skills can be adapted rather than simply transferred unchanged.

Beach handball is not merely an indoor match moved outdoors. IHF's teaching booklet explains the smaller playing group, separately decided halves and special goal values. Movement on sand, handling and the timing of rotational shots give spectators different problems to examine. The official educational film here helps explain that tactical setting. It is not presented as personal match footage of Özel or an archive recording from the 2004 championship.

Reading a playmaker beyond the goal column

EHF's report of Türkiye's match with Iceland on 2 March 2022 credits Özel with the winning goal, scored with 46 seconds remaining in a 30–29 victory. The same report records eight goals by Aslı İskit, seven by Fatma Kücükyıldız and ten saves by goalkeeper Merve Durdu. The final shot is memorable; attributing the whole comeback to one player would conceal how the team actually made it possible.

Watch where teammates stand when a playmaker receives the ball, how she moves after passing and when an attack changes speed. A useful decision may draw defenders towards her and release space for someone else. It may instead reject a difficult pass and restart the pattern. These observations do not let us read a player's thoughts with certainty. They do make viewing more informative than counting only the attacks that end in her own shot.

A national farewell is not a club retirement

The 2022 ceremony marked the end of a long national-team journey that included youth categories. Later EHF season records show her continuing in club handball. It would therefore be misleading to treat the farewell as the date all professional competition stopped. Club assignments and season totals can change; an older report is not used here as confirmation of a present-day squad.

Reading Özel alongside basketball playmaker Işıl Alben and Türkiye's women's volleyball team suggests that leadership in women's team sport has several forms. Passing rules, space and time differ between these disciplines. The useful connection is not that the positions are identical, but that each involves creating options for teammates. Making handball history more visible requires attention to club settings, collective work and changing playing environments as well as the final goal.

Questions and explanations

Did Özel win the Champions League?

The verified achievement described here is reaching the 2005 final with Kometal. A finalist finish and a championship win are different results. An award nomination, season statistic or distinction at another tournament does not change that result.

Was her beach handball award a team title?

No. At Alanya in 2004 Özel was named best player while Türkiye's women finished fifth. Reading the individual distinction alongside the final team ranking preserves the award's actual meaning.

How can I follow a playmaker's contribution?

Look beyond goals to the timing of passes, changes in defensive positioning and the quality of shooting chances available to teammates. The IHF film explains beach handball's tactical setting; assessing a particular player's performance requires footage of her own matches.
