What the announcement covers
Metro İstanbul's 5 October notice says its rail lines will offer free travel on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, under a municipal council decision. This report precedes the service day; it is not an on-site observation.
Calculate any onward journey separately. If your route involves Marmaray, a ferry or a private operator, check that provider’s announcement before assuming the whole trip is free. The evidence examined here does not establish their fares for the day. A confirmed free segment is only one part of a journey involving several services.
Back to section list ↑Choose the line before the interchange
The operator’s directory includes the M4 Kadıköy–Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı and M5 Üsküdar–Sultanbeyli metro lines, as well as the T1 Kabataş–Bağcılar tram and F1 Taksim–Kabataş funicular. Write down the line code and direction when planning a trip, particularly if you are unfamiliar with station names.
Metro İstanbul publishes separate maps for the wider rail network, metro routes and tram routes, alongside a map of lines under construction. Use the relevant operating network when selecting your journey. Note the boarding station, interchange and destination before leaving. A connection shown on a map helps you plan where to change; it does not by itself establish the fare on another service.
Back to section list ↑A possible outing using T1
The official T1 station list includes Sirkeci, Gülhane, Sultanahmet and Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı. One option is to choose one of these stops for arrival and another for the return trip, building your own outing around the places you want to visit. Decide which parts you would prefer to walk rather than assuming you must begin and end at the same stop.
This is a planning suggestion, not an organised tour or an announced municipal event. Check each destination’s visiting hours, entry conditions and walking route separately. If travelling with children, a pushchair or someone with limited mobility, consider whether your return plan requires repeating the same walk and whether a different boarding point would suit your group better.
Back to section list ↑Check the return time and accessible route
The timetable page offers line and station selection, a departure-time search and first- and last-train headings. Look up your own route for the time you intend to travel, then plan the return separately. Free travel does not establish an overnight service. No departure time or service frequency for a selected line has been verified for this report.
The operator’s accessibility information describes lifts, ramps, tactile surfaces and staff assistance when needed. This is general provision information, not confirmation that a particular lift will work when you arrive. If you need a step-free journey, check the entrance and interchange as well as the station name. Ask station staff to explain a route suited to your needs.
Back to section list ↑The history behind the date
The Istanbul Governor’s chronology records Turkish troops under Şükrü Naili Gökberk entering the city on 6 October 1923, making 2026 the 103rd anniversary. The same chronology dates the proclamation of the Republic to 29 October 1923. The two October commemorations refer to different historical events.
When arranging a visit, check transport, commemorative events and venue access separately. A fare announcement does not establish that a museum is open, that an event is taking place or that admission is free. Match the places you choose to visit with a realistic journey home, rather than planning only how to reach the first stop.
