An international pathway in breaststroke

Berkay Ömer Öğretir, listed as Berkay Ogretir in World Aquatics records, is a Turkish international whose main events are the 100m and 200m breaststroke. These races share a stroke but require different distributions of speed and effort. His career illustrates the development of specialisation across those related demands. National performances, the Olympic qualification pathway and experience at world championships form connected stages rather than interchangeable achievements. Reducing them to a medal total would hide the performance standards required to reach elite competition. In swimming, international participation itself often rests on precise, measurable thresholds, making the route to the major event an important part of the athlete’s story.

A qualifying swim on the road to Tokyo

The Turkish Swimming Federation recorded Öğretir’s 59.54 in the long-course 100m breaststroke at national-team trials as meeting the Olympic A standard for Tokyo 2020. A qualifying standard serves a different purpose from a championship finishing position: it establishes that a swimmer has met a defined entry performance. In his career, that swim was therefore more than a domestic time; it opened a specific international opportunity. The Games retained the Tokyo 2020 name but took place in 2021. His pathway also reminds readers that an Olympic story begins well before the opening ceremony, through selection meets and preparation spread across a much longer competitive period.

A national record and world-level experience

On 22 December 2020, Öğretir swam the short-course 200m breaststroke in 2:03.78, listed as a Turkish record. His 100m performance at the following year’s short-course World Championships was 57.17. These are different distances and cannot be compared as if they were two entries in one ranking. The first identifies a national-record achievement; the second places a performance within a world championship. His 200m record draws attention to sustaining speed across a longer effort, while the international appearance shows that technique being tested against another field and within a major-event setting. Together they connect domestic progression with competition beyond Türkiye.

Coordination and the relay dimension

Breaststroke joins the pull, breath, kick and glide into a coordinated sequence. More effort does not automatically produce more progress if the timing becomes inefficient. Over 200m, maintaining that sequence as fatigue grows becomes especially important. Öğretir’s record across both main distances offers a concrete example of the relationship between technical economy and speed. His biography also includes the team side of swimming: club reporting records his involvement in relay squads at the 2019 World Championships. In a relay, one swimmer’s performance becomes part of a shared result produced in sequence by four athletes. That collective setting complements his individual races rather than disappearing behind them.
