From youth internationals to European club handball

Yeliz Özel’s career is an important example of a player developed in Türkiye taking significant responsibility in European club handball. The EHF’s national-team farewell account records a youth international debut against Spain in 1995 and her first European club appearance with Ankara PTT. Her later route included Byåsen in Norway, Kometal Skopje in North Macedonia and Oltchim in Romania. Moving between leagues requires adaptation to different defensive approaches and different forms of communication within a team. Describing her only as a Turkish international would therefore leave out a substantial part of the story: the competitive experience accumulated across borders and the visibility that experience gave Turkish women’s handball within the wider European game.

Understanding the playmaker’s responsibility

Özel’s importance is easier to appreciate when handball is watched through more than the number of goals scored. A playmaker helps determine the direction of an attack while reading teammates’ movements and the spaces within the defence. The timing of a pass, a change of pace and the choice of which player should receive an opening can alter the flow of a match. Effectiveness in that role means combining individual finishing ability with the team’s collective structure. Özel’s place in prominent clubs in several countries illustrates the international level at which she carried that responsibility. A biography that omits the role risks showing only spectacular goals and overlooking how attacks are constructed through connected decisions.

The 2005 final and a long national-team story

Reaching the 2005 Champions League final with Kometal Skopje was a major landmark in Özel’s club career. Playing a final is not the same as winning the trophy; the achievement is accurately described as reaching the last stage of Europe’s leading club competition. Türkiye’s silver medal at the 2009 Mediterranean Games belongs among her important national-team results. The EHF identifies the 2022 European qualification match against Serbia as the occasion of her national-team farewell. Its reference to twenty-seven years includes youth age groups, rather than twenty-seven years exclusively in the senior side. Nor does that farewell establish that every part of her club career ended on the same date. Those distinctions preserve the scale of a long career without exaggerating it.

Beach handball and a broader sporting legacy

Beach handball forms another distinct part of Özel’s story. The EHF’s retrospective on the 2004 European Beach Handball Championships recalls her selection as the best women’s player of the tournament. That award shows sporting influence extending into a different playing environment, but beach and indoor results should not be merged into an undifferentiated list of championships. Her wider significance is that Turkish women’s handball has a history extending well beyond the domestic league. Overseas club experience, continuity with the national team and responsibility in different forms of the sport together create a biography richer than a single medal entry. In a team sport, a player’s place in history is shaped not only by final scores but also by the organisation of play and the movement of experience between teams and generations.
