A senior world champion at seventeen

Hamza Yerlikaya won the 82kg Greco-Roman world title in 1993 at the age of seventeen. The significance is not simply that he was young: he had reached the top of a senior world championship, not an age-group event. Such an early result established a demanding level to sustain in the years that followed. His career is particularly interesting because the breakthrough did not remain an isolated teenage achievement. World and Olympic titles came in different seasons, turning early promise into a long international record. That combination of precocity and continuity explains his distinctive place within Türkiye’s Greco-Roman wrestling tradition.

Olympic victories in Atlanta and Sydney

Yerlikaya won gold at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Titles at separate Games represent different preparation cycles and changing opponents. Moving from a world championship to the Olympics is more than changing a tournament’s name: qualification, scheduling and public expectations create another competitive environment. Succeeding in both settings prevents his biography from being reduced to one great match. His two Olympic victories are individual milestones within the national team’s longer history. They belong to Greco-Roman wrestling and should not be blended with freestyle achievements. The same wrestling mat can host distinct technical disciplines, each with its own restrictions, competitive traditions and championship records.

How Greco-Roman wrestling shapes the contest

Greco-Roman wrestling excludes direct attacks on an opponent’s legs. That restriction places particular importance on upper-body control, grips and the disruption of balance. Simply pushing harder is not enough: the wrestler needs to affect the opponent’s position while protecting his own stability. Standing exchanges and control on the mat produce different opportunities. This context makes Yerlikaya’s achievements easier to understand without reducing wrestling to a contest of strength alone. Preparing the moment for a move, responding to resistance and protecting an advantage are also part of the sport. These are explanations of his discipline, not claims to reveal an undocumented personal training method.

A career reaching into another decade

UWW’s Hall of Fame record lists world golds in 1993, 1995 and 2005. Twelve years separate the first and last of those titles, providing a concrete measure of his competitive longevity. The record also includes world silver in 1997 and bronze in 2006, describing a career beyond victories alone. Changing categories and eras mean each result needs its own date and context. Yerlikaya’s contribution lies in reproducing elite performance against successive fields rather than remaining defined by the age of his first breakthrough. His Hall of Fame entry preserves that longer sporting history within the international institution’s memory of the discipline.
